Q: What will work on vegetable tannage?

A: There are quite a lot factors working on vegetable tannage by influence tannins’ penetration and combination.

1. Pelt condition:  The relaxation of fibers and the pretreatment before tannage.

2. Performance of extracts: Extract’s penetration and combination to the hides/skins, whether it can give excellent features to the leathers, and the color, solubility, pH value, precipitation of extract.

3. Concentration of the bath: At low concentration, the concentration gradient of bath diffusion into hides/skins is small, leading to a slow penetration; at high concentration, the concentration gradient of bath diffusion into hides/skins is big, leading to a quick penetration. However, with a high concentration, the assembly of tannin particles will be improved, difference between the penetration pressures in and out of the hides/skins will be increased, dehydration of the hides/skins will be strengthen.

4. Temperature of the bath: At high temperature, it results in a rapid penetration into hides/skins of tannins. The irreversible combination and total combination of tannins to the collagen will be increased, the hardness of leather will be improved as well.

5. pH value of the bath: It shows a direct impact on the particle size and charge of tannins, as well as the charge of pelt, and the penetration and combination of tannins to the hides/skins.

6. Neutral salts: If the pelt was previously treated with neutral salts, combination of tannins to collagens would be slowed down to avoid rough and over-tannage of grain, helping penetration of tannins. However, too much neutral salts will prevent combination, lead to precipitation and loss of tannins for salting-out effect, and reduce the concentration of bath as well.
